Nicholas Houghton, baroque organ

Conductor and organist Nick Houghton began his musical career at the age of seven, as a chorister at Coventry Cathedral.

He studied organ with David Lepine and Robert Weddle before going on to a music degree at Bristol University, taking organ lessons with Nicolas Kynaston. He took his PGCE at Magdalene College, Cambridge and since then has successfully combined teaching with a career as a freelance musician.

As well as his work as a continuo player and organist, Nick is in demand as an accompanist and choral conductor. He is currently Music Director of the Lewes Singers, the Lewes Chamber Choir and the East Sussex Community Choir.

Alongside his playing career, Nick has held a variety of teaching roles in both the independent and state sector. He currently teaches A level academic music at the East Sussex Academy of Music (ESAM) in Lewes. ESAM provides talented young musicians with pre-professional music training, and Nick takes a key role in accompanying and working with students on performance skills and recital preparation.

Nick is a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists.
